Calgary police say it’s disappointing to see that so many people continued to speed through school zones despite classes resuming this week.
Officers handed out approximately fourteen hundred tickets in school zones, including one to a school bus driver and another to someone who was impaired and driving without a license.
“We can’t rely on kids to show good judgment when they’re crossing the street,” said CPS traffic Staff Sergeant Paul Stacey. “They’re all worried about their first week of school so it’s really incumbent on parents and other drivers to obey the school zone limits.”
One driver was caught going 70 km/h in the 30 zone; his excuse was that he was late for a golf tee time.
CPS is hoping drivers kick summer driving habits to the curb.
“Once people get their minds back in gear and adjusted to the fact that school is back in session and because the kids are actually out and about, we’re hoping that as the month goes on we see a little less of what we saw this week.”
The city is still in the process of transitioning all school zones into playground zones.
It’s anticipated that the entire process should be complete by October
