Residents at Regina seniors complex upset over no “used items” rule

REGINA – A petition is now circulating among residents living at a social housing seniors complex in Regina over restrictions on what tenants can bring into their units.

A letter by the Regina Housing Authority, the property management company, says items from dumpsters are not welcome in the building.

Tenants welcome that rule, but take issue with the notice’s restrictions on bringing in items from thrift stores, garage sales, or giveaways from friends or family.

“It’s quite broad, it covers things that are outrageous,” explained resident, Brigitta Maki.

She says most people living in the building rely on buying or receiving second hand items due to their finances.

“We can’t all just go to Lowes or The Brick and buy whatever we want, if we could we wouldn’t be here.”

In a statement, Regina Housing Authority said it’s their responsibility to follow the Saskatchewan Residential Tenancies Act by maintaining units to reasonable health, cleanliness and sanitary standards.

“Properties where there has been a history of pest control concerns, such as Prairie Place, we must take heightened action around protection to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our tenants” writes general manager, John McFetridge.

The letter to tenants warned that anyone caught breaking the rules would be charged for pest removal and could face eviction.

Many residents feel the restrictions punish all tenants and not the select few bringing in the pests.

With 75 signatures and counting on a petition circulating in the building, seniors are hoping the Regina Housing Authority will come up with another, less draconian, option.

“It’s just a matter of freedom, of choice, to have that option,” added Make.

Regina Housing Authority adds it recognized how the notice may have raised questions and will be meeting with tenants to discuss their concerns.
