With so many events in and around Toronto, it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening and what’s worth venturing out for. Here are five things we recommend doing in the city this weekend.
Get your geek on
If you’re into sci-fi, horror, comics, anime or video games then Fan Expo Canada is where you need to be this weekend. Running from Thursday, Sept. 3 to Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, this year’s impressive lineup of guests includes the likes of Gillian Anderson, Billy Dee Williams, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton from the Harry Potter films, Norman Reedus and Lennie James from The Walking Dead, Guelph native Neve Campbell, Jeri Ryan, Mike Tyson and Toronto Batman. Watch some snowbirds
Whether you love it or hate it, the Canadian International Air Show is an end-of-summer tradition in Toronto. Running daily from Sept. 5 to 7 between 12 and 3 p.m., the show promises to be big and loud with a CF-18 Hornet demo and performances by the Breitling Jet Team from France and the CF Snowbirds. While you can hear the show from most areas of the city, head down around the CNE for the best spot to watch. For more information, visit cias.org.
Build a Super Mario level
In anticipation of the release of the new Super Mario Maker game, Nintendo is setting up the Super Mario Construction Zone at the Ontario Science Centre Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Guests can try out the game as well as make a real-life Super Mario level using stickers and posters. Mario will also be walking around greeting guests and doing photo ops between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, visit nintendo.ca.
Burn your mouth for the love of good food
Running from Sept. 4 to 7, the Hot & Spicy Food Festival at the Harbourfront Centre is sure to please those who enjoy burning their mouths and sweating with every bite they take. Chef Vikram Vij will be cooking and doing a talk and there will be other food demos and tastings all weekend. There’s also live music and markets where attendees can purchase special hot sauces and other spicy goods. For more information, visit harbourfrontcentre.com.
Go fishing
Just because you’re stuck in the city for the long weekend doesn’t mean you can’t go fishing. Toronto has many great fishing spots, including Bluffer’s Park, Tommy Thompson Park, High Park and Ashbridge’s Bay (visit toronto.com for a complete list). Don’t forget you do need a fishing licence if you plan to fish anywhere in Ontario.
Ongoing events in the city include the CNE, Full House: The Musical!, the exhibit Andy Warhol Revisited: A Mirror For Today and many outdoor movie screenings.
