Los Angeles Kings forward Milan Lucic is stirring some controversy by admitting he has always dreamed of playing for the Vancouver Canucks.

In an interview to TSN 1040 Radio on Monday, Lucic said he has one year left on his contract and there is a possibility that he can hit the unrestricted free agent market.

“It’s obviously something that’s been a dream of mine since I’ve been a kid, is to play in your hometown and play for the Canucks, but right now the main focus is going down to L.A. and trying to make the most of that,” said Lucic.

The 27-year-old has a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the city and Vancouver hockey fans.

A Vancouver native, Lucic started his career playing for the Vancouver Giants, signing with the Boston Bruins in 2007.

He was part of the Bruins squad that beat the Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup final at Rogers Arena that was followed by a riot.

And in December 2013, Lucic made headlines in Vancouver again when a video of him getting into an altercation with another man outside a local nightclub was posted online.

In a press conference that followed the incident, Lucic said, “I have no reason left to defend my city and the people in my city. I’m disgusted and outraged that it had to come to something like that.”

“So as far as that goes, other than being in Rogers Arena, no one will ever see me in downtown Vancouver ever again.”

However, in a statement released later to the media, Lucic appeared to backtrack on his remarks, saying, “I am still – and always will be – proud to be from there. It is home. While the actions of a few individuals have deeply upset me and will impact the time I spend downtown going forward, I will not let those incidents diminish the love and pride I have for the city as a whole.”
