WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have acquired quarterback Matt Nichols from the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick in the 2017 CFL Draft.

Nichols has spent his entire six-year CFL career in Edmonton. During that time, the import completed 270 of 443 passes for 3,386 yards and 19 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 138 yards and three majors.

“Matt is a player with significant experience in this league,” said Bombers GM Kyle Walters. “He has proven to be a solidified quarterback and will come in and add immediate depth to this position on our roster.”

The Bombers have struggled since their primary pivot, Drew Willy, suffered a right knee injury on Aug. 9 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Winnipeg has dropped back-to-back games, scoring a combined 28 points in the two losses.

Nichols will not start in Sunday’s Labour Day Classic out in Saskatchewan against the Roughriders. Robert Marve may also not get the ball after missing Tuesday’s practice due to a left leg injury. If Marve can’t go this weekend, Brian Brohm will most likely start.

“I have no real expectation right now,” said Brohm. “I haven’t been told anything. I just have to keep working everyday to get better. Show up and do whatever they ask me to do.”

The Bombers have also added veteran running back Chevon Walker to the practice roster. Walker has racked up 1,594 yards and eight touchdowns on 327 carries over four seasons along with 86 catches for 816 yards and five touchdowns.

“He’s got a lot of speed,” said Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea. “He can be north south in a hurry. Anytime you have the opportunity to add that kind of dynamic player, that speed to your roster, it’s important.”
