Hikers defy closed trail warnings in North Vancouver

ABOVE: Some of the trails in North Vancouver are closed, but that isn’t stopping some hikers.

North Shore Rescue is warning people to use extreme caution along hiking trails.

Some of the trails are still closed following Saturday’s windstorm as they are littered with fallen logs and downed trees, but that hasn’t stopped some people from heading out into Lynn Canyon Park.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Some hikers were bypassing the yellow tape put across the entrance to the trails.

“You can be sure the caution tape is there for a reason,” said Mike Danks from North Shore Search and Rescue.

Metro Vancouver says if there was a serious concern they would close the gates to the parks completely. However, they have not yet had the chance to fully assess all the trails and say people should not risk their safety until they have had the chance to do an assessment.

The recent heavy rain means rivers and creeks on the North Shore are flowing much higher than usual.

Officials say anyone heading into the mountains should leave a detailed plan of your route with someone before heading out.
