A 35-year-old man from Abbotsford died after crashing into a water-filled ditch in Pitt Meadows Tuesday morning.

The unidentified man was driving his pickup truck at 7:20 a.m. on McNeil Road and he went into the ditch while turning right onto Harris Road.

The man died at the scene and his truck was completely submerged in the water.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The vehicle was completely submerged and had to be pulled out with a tow truck to gain access to the driver’s compartment,” said Cpl. Steve Martin with the Ridge Meadows RCMP.

“The waters in the ditch are at least seven or eight feet deep. So it’s very easy to lose a vehicle in the ditches here.”

The coroner has now taken over the investigation.
