A Del City, Oklahoma mother made a heart-wrenching phone call to 911 after she discovered she left her 6-month-old in the car. Sehldra Brigham reports.
A 6-month-old baby died after being left in a car in Del City, Oklahoma on Saturday.
The mother of the young girl frantically called 911 after realizing she had accidentally left her child in her vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of the home.
“The baby, the baby is in the car. She’s dead,” the mother frantically yelled into the phone.
Police arrived a short time later and could not revive the baby who showed no signs of life when officers arrived.
The 6-month-old was pronounced dead in hospital.
It’s not known how long the young girl was left in the car but Major Jody Suit with the city’s police department said to KROF News any amount of time a child is left in a car is too long.
“It doesn’t take very long in a hot car for a child to die in this kind of heat like we’re having lately,” he said, “Fifteen to 20 minutes can be fatal.”
Suit said the city has seen temperatures as high as 32C to 37C.
According to KFOR News, this incident was the city’s first case of a child dying after being left in a hot car this year but the 17th in the U.S.
KROF also added 53 per cent of children were inadvertently forgotten in a vehicle while 17 per cent of parents thought leaving their kid in a car was safe.
“Every time you get out of the car, take [your child] with you,” said Suit to KFOR News.
The incident is being considered a homicide and the investigation is ongoing.
