EDMONTON – The air quality advisory issued by Alberta Health Service for Edmonton was lifted Tuesday after being in place for nearly a week.

The decision was made to lift the advisory after monitoring showed the area was no longer impacted by smoke from fires in northwestern areas of the United States.

During the advisory, AHS warned healthy people could experience temporary irritation of eyes and throat and shortness of breath.

Advice was provided on reducing exposure to the poor air quality like closing and locking all outside windows and doors, turning down furnace thermostats and furnace fans to the minimum setting, and keeping windows and vents closed while driving in a vehicle.

On Monday, Environment Canada ended its poor air quality statement for Calgary, but AHS’ advisory remained in effect. The organization said it was waiting for an updated forecast, as there was potential for a “plume” of smoke to impact Calgary again mid-week.
