LA RONGE, Sask. – A mother bear and her two cubs were destroyed recently after several brushes with people in the northern community of La Ronge, Sask. Daryl Minter, a spokesman with Saskatchewan Environment, said the black bears were put down late last week after they had been spotted repeatedly near the town’s high school and fire hall.
Minter said it became clear to conservation officers who made several attempts to trap and relocate the bears that something more had to be done about them.
He said some people on a road reported seeing a bear that did not appear to be afraid of humans and was closing the distance between them.

A fourth bear was initially spotted near a golf course last week and was also seen Monday morning near a government building in the town.
Minter said that overall, it’s been a very quiet summer for bears in the La Ronge area, probably due to wildfires.
