NS Business Minister asking Screen Nova Scotia for meeting

WATCH ABOVE: One day after two television and film supply companies announced they are leaving Nova Scotia, the government has agreed to meet once again with Film Nova Scotia. Global’s Marieke Walsh reports.

HALIFAX – Business Minister Mark Furey is asking Screen Nova Scotia for a meeting on Monday following the sudden closure of two film supply companies in the province.

Government spokesperson Toby Koffman confirmed Furey had asked for a meeting following Thursday’s news that PS Atlantic and SIM Digital are leaving the province. Screen Nova Scotia chair Marc Almon confirmed he received an email asking for the meeting but declined further comment Friday morning.

On Thursday, Screen Nova Scotia sent a letter to Premier Stephen McNeil asking for an emergency meeting. However, the premier’s press secretary, Laurel Munroe, said he will not be at the meeting because he will be in Asia on a trip that his office says will promote trade and investment opportunities for Nova Scotia business.

The parent group for the two companies, SIM Group, said the decision to leave the province is due in part to the changes made to the film tax incentive program.

In a press release, the company said the changes have “led to a decline in film and television production in the province, left the future of the industry in that region uncertain, and caused some companies and individuals to leave.”

In the April budget, the Liberal government axed the film tax credit and replaced it with the Film and Television Production Incentive Fund, administered by Nova Scotia Business Inc.
