HOULTON, Maine – Police say the pilot is presumed dead in a small plane crash, the wreckage of which was found in a manmade pond in the northern Maine town of Houlton.
State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the pond was being drained Thursday in order for emergency workers to get to the wreckage and recover the body.
Police did not name the pilot.
McCausland says the plane was expected to land at a local airport for a customs inspection.
It appears to have clipped some trees and flipped over in the pond.
The plane was found on Thursday morning.
Police had been called to investigate a possible crash and were searching for the plane near the Houlton airport, which is on the border with New Brunswick.
The pilot is believed to have been the plane’s sole occupant.
