Floods, tornado batter eastern Australia

TORONTO – Parts of eastern Australia were battered by severe weather on Monday which included flooding and even a tornado.

According to local media, residents near a dam on the south coast of New South Wales have been ordered to evacuate over concerns that the dam is about to burst.

Heavy rain produced a deluge of rain along the coast of New South Wales on Tuesday. Winds close to 65 km/h with gusts as high as 90 km/h also battered the shore.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology recorded almost 200 mm of rain in some parts since 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The weather service is advising people to move their vehicles away from trees, secure loose items outside the home and to keep clear of creeks and storm drains as there is the threat of flash floods as the rain continues.

Meanwhile, residents in Dubbo, New South Wales, were shocked when a tornado tore through the area, damaging cars and buildings.
