WINNIPEG — In 20 years, a new community could take over the Rail Side and Parcel Four lands in Winnipeg.

The Forks held a public event to discuss plans for the 12 acre area Thursday evening.

The Rail Side and Parcel Four lands are the surface parking lots across from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the gravel lot north on York Avenue.

“The public, they don’t believe that surface parking lots is the best way to use that space,” The Forks manager of marketing and communications Chelsea Thomson said.

The plan is to build on what is already at The Forks without eliminating the parking spaces completely. Plans are in place to add more spots while building the community.

“We’re talking residential units, we’re talking restaurants and patios, we’re talking great commercial spaces that will be inexpensive,” Thomson said.

Thomson also said the rapid transit and union station will be a hub for all of the additions to the space.

The Forks currently owns the Rail Side Lands and the city owns Parcel Four.

The event also showcased plans for a Craft Brewery that could be added to the popular tourist attraction in 2017.
