Child found locked in Niagara Falls hotel safe was an accident: police

WATCH ABOVE: Det. Cst. Amanda Sanders of Niagara Police explains that a baby found locked in a safe in a Niagara Falls hotel room was deemed an accident after speaking to the child’s parents on Wednesday.

TORONTO – Police have concluded that a baby found locked inside a Niagara Falls hotel safe and freed by a maintenance worker earlier this week was an accident and there are no concerns for the child’s safety.

Their conclusion comes after the parents of the child contacted police from Markham, Ont. on Wednesday evening.

“We did interview the people involved and determined that she’s safe,” said Detective Constable Amanda Sanders of the Niagara Regional Police Child Abuse Unit.

Police say children were playing hide-and-seek in a Howard Johnson hotel room when a sibling and the child decided it was a good spot to hide in the safe.

“An older sibling helped her get into the safe and pressed a couple buttons on it and didn’t know how to open it again,” said Det. Cst. Sanders.

“The parents immediately went out and tried to find some staff members to assist them to get the child out which ultimately resulted in a positive end.”

Inside the safe, police say the child never lost consciousness and was constantly calling for her parents the whole time.

Police say the family had travelled from Niagara Falls to a Markham hotel north of Toronto when the parents contacted authorities.

“They’ve been cooperative ever since we’ve gotten a hold of them,” said Det. Cst. Sanders.

“We were concerned of the welfare of the baby. There’s no criminality involved as it was an accident.”

Police had been searching for a grey Ford passenger van with a New Jersey licence plate since the incident took place on Tuesday.

Authorities say the family left the scene in Niagara Falls before police were notified.
