Lethbridge police officer saves life

WATCH ABOVE: Lethbridge Police Constable Chris Stock was called to a Kinsmen Park in Lethbridge Sunday night for what he thought was an assault, but it turned out to be a Fentanyl overdose. Luckily Officer Stock was able to get to the scene in time, performing CPR on the young male’s life to save him.

A man in his early-20’s is alive today thanks, in large part, to the actions of Lethbridge Regional Police Constable Chris Stock.  Cst. Stock put his CPR training into practice Sunday night after the veteran officer received a call of an apparent assault at Kinsmen Park.  But, after arriving on scene, he realized it was a completely different situation.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“A man was laying on his back and his friend was giving him chest compressions,” said Stock.  “He looked dead to me.  He looked blue, he looked like what we see with typical bodies. He looked like a dead person.”

The man was overdosing on the drug Fentanyl.

“I jumped in,” said Stock. “I checked his airway, did the head tilt, made sure his airway wasn’t obstructed and I started doing chest compressions.”

After several minutes of CPR, the victim started breathing on his own and it looked as though the ordeal was over.

“I started talking to him, encouraging him, ‘You’re going to be alive. I’ve got EMS coming’”, said Stock.  “But, then he just went limp again and wasn’t moving.”

Stock immediately resumed CPR, resuscitating the man just before EMS arrived.

Michael Miller was one of the paramedics who arrived on scene to help, and was appreciative of the job Stock was able to do.

“Not only did officer Stock start this man’s heart,” said Miller. “But, he probably saved him from brain damage in the end as well.”

Stock believes he just did what any other officer would.

“There’s 175 other cops who have done the exact same thing.  So I didn’t do anything outstanding, by any means.”
