Petitcodiac Watershed using videos to promote environmental awareness

ABOVE WATCH: The Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance is producing weekly videos based on local environmental topics, as Global’s Brion Robinson reports; their work is reaching a broad audience.

MONCTON – An environmental awareness group is using short videos to bring more attention to issues in the Greater Moncton area.

The Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance has been shooting videos since last summer.

Christine McLauchlan is the group’s executive director and says she came up with the idea of making videos after watching other popular YouTube channels.

“We really want to take our science and make it more accessible and make it fun and interesting,” she said. “YouTube is a really good platform for that.”

So far, the group’s produced dozens of videos and attracted hundreds of views. Their topics range from river clean-ups to wildlife that live along the river.

Andrew Downey is the group’s videographer and says people should know how the group’s work benefits the community.

“We like to actually show people what we’re doing as an association so to do that effectively we have to be transparent and what better way to do that than to take footage and upload it online,” he said.

“It’s important to get creative in our videos because it actually creates citizen’s attention and that’s exactly what you do around a subject.”
