American family has U-Haul full of their life’s possessions stolen in Abbotsford

WATCH:  A family of five heading from Georgia to their new home in Alaska has been devastated by theft.  John Hua reports.

Anna Spencer wasn’t in Abbotsford for more than 12 hours when her U-Haul truck containing her entire life’s possessions, valued at about $100,000, was stolen.

“My life, my children’s life, our military gear… everything that we have accumulated,” a tearful Spencer told police.

Spencer and her five children were en route from Georgia to Fairbanks, Alaska to join her husband, who is in the military and was recently transferred there. They were spending the night at a hotel in the 36000-block of North Parallel Road in Abbotsford when their 26-foot GMC U-Haul was stolen Monday morning.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Investigators reviewed the hotel’s security footage and found a suspect vehicle pulled up beside the U-Haul truck at 3:22 a.m. on Aug. 17 and by 3:46 a.m., the U-Haul was driven away.

Police recovered the stolen U-Haul truck in Surrey this morning but said a significant number of items were missing.

“What can I do? I can depend on the community to see what’s wrong, if they can come forward on if they’ve seen anything suspicious,” Spencer said.

“It didn’t take overnight to gain all of this; it took a lifetime to build what we had.”

Anyone with information about this theft should contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-22-8477.
