Pastor faces more charges after alleged sexual assaults during exorcisms

TORONTO — A pastor at a Toronto church faces additional charges after police say he sexually assaulted and defrauded at least five women between the late 1980’s and 2015.

Wayne Marlon Jones, 53, of Ajax was was originally charged in February with sexual assault and three counts of fraud over $5,000.

On Wednesday, after an additional victim came forward, Toronto police said Jones now faces a total of five counts of sexual assault, three counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count each of administer noxious substance and theft over $1,000, dating back to the late 1980’s.

Jones was a pastor at the United Spiritual Baptist Church and police said between May 2011 and May 2013 he offered “spiritual guidance” to a woman, including performing exorcisms.

Police said similar incidents occurred in the lat 1980’s and while he was a pastor at the former Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Toronto from 1993 to late 1996.

In those incidents women were allegedly sexually assaulted during sessions and convinced to give Jones money and property, according to police.

Police believe there are other victims and are reminding the public that immigration status is not a factor when they are a victim of a crime, as they are not required to disclose their immigration status to police when reporting crimes.

Const. Victor Kwong said the victim’s immigration status may have been “held over their heads,” so police are urging anyone who may have experienced this to come forward.
