UPDATE: Special air quality advisory in effect for south Okanagan now over

UPDATE: Air quality advisory has ended for Okanagan, Boundary and Kootenay regions.

Residents in south Okanagan are being warned to watch out for smoky skies today. 

The Ministry of Environment has issued an air quality advisory for the southern areas of the Okanagan, Boundary and Kootenay regions, spanning the communities of Oliver, Osoyoos, Rock Creek, Grand Forks, Castlegar and Creston.

These areas are affected by smoke from wildfires burning in the region and south of the border.

Authorities say smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.

Exposure to increased smoke concentrations is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions, such as heart or lung disease. Those at risk should avoid strenuous activities and prolonged exposure to smoke.

Anyone who experiences symptoms like difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways is advised to see their doctor and potentially consider limiting their activity and exposure.
