MONTREAL – Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officers are investigating after a suspicious package was found in Lacolle, near the US border on Saturday morning.
A passerby alerted police at around 8:20 a.m. after she noticed a black briefcase that had been left by some community mailboxes on de L’Eglise Street, near a local police station and an SQ detachment.
The SQ told Global News that a safety perimeter was quickly set up, with 50 households and a few businesses evacuated.
The affected area included, Chemin Grande Ligne, Poussard and Bisaillon streets and Route 221.
The SQ bomb squad was sent at around noon to retrieve the package and identify its contents.
The perimeter has since been lifted but the investigation continues.
Police have no suspects and the motive remains unclear.
