CALGARY – Following this week’s extreme heat and dry conditions, two fire bans have been implemented in parts of southern Alberta.

The M.D. of Foothills and the Village of Longview are subject to a complete ban, which includes burning barrels, fireworks and any other outdoor fires that do not require permits. All existing fires are to be put out, and all fire permits are suspended.

Meanwhile, Waterton Lakes National Park has been placed under a partial fire ban. Fires in designated outdoor pits across the park and in Townsite cottage lots are prohibited, as is the use of charcoal briquettes or wood-burning stoves in picnic shelters.

The only exceptions to the Waterton Lakes ban are the picnic shelters in the Cameron Bay and Emerald Bay day use areas, and the kitchen shelters in the Townsite Campground.

Portable propane campfires and gas or propane barbecues and stoves are still permitted.

Both fire bans will be in place until further notice. For the bans to be repealed, the areas will have to get enough rain that the danger of wildfires is significantly reduced.
