SASKATOON – Drivers in Saskatoon are in for a nasty shock at the pumps. Gas prices have jumped to $1.24, up 16 cents a litre.

In Regina, the spike was almost as high, with prices there going up to $1.21.

The increase in both cities is one of the biggest one-day jumps ever. The spike comes at a time when crude oil prices are at a six-year low.

“We could see gas prices going even higher yet, even up to $1.28 per litre,” said Jason Toews, co-founder of Gas Buddy.

“By next week, we could see another seven to eight cent hike.”

For those looking to conserve fuel, here are some tips:

  • keep your tires properly inflated;
  • avoiding leaving vehicles idling, even for a few minutes;
  • use air conditioning sparingly;
  • drive at a slower pace; and
  • keep your vehicle tuned up and running efficiently.
