TORONTO – The province’s police watchdog has launched an investigation after a 21-year-old woman fell from a tree following an interaction with officers in Brampton.

A statement released by the Special Investigations Unit said the incident began Thursday morning when Peel Regional Police responded to a distress call at Ken Whillans Park.

Police arrived to find a distraught woman up in a tree but “climbed higher” when officers approached her.

Following a lengthy talk with a police negotiator that lasted “over a period of hours,” the SIU said the woman fell as the officer was coming down from the tree.

The woman was taken to hospital with head and hip injuries.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and one forensic investigators to the case.
