Airbnb renter caught on camera stealing $35K in valuables

WATCH: A woman has been caught on tape allegedly stealing more than $35,000 in valuables after renting the apartment through Airbnb. The home security footage shows the woman snooping around the room even though the renter told the woman that area of the apartment was off limits. Mike Sugarman reports.

It didn’t take long for police to identify an Airbnb renter who was caught on tape stealing more than $35,000 in valuables, including jewelry and watches.

The incident took place in April after an apartment owner, who isn’t identified, rented out her San Francisco apartment to Jana Dominquez, 27, through Airbnb, an online lodging website.

The victim told CBS the alleged suspect had access to the entire apartment, excluding an office and closet that were locked and to remain off limits to Dominquez.

The home security footage shows Dominquez entering the room anyway and snooping around.

WATCH: A Calgary woman isn’t impressed with the damage guarantee offered by Airbnb. She used the service to rent her home and now it needs thousands in repairs. At first Airbnb denied her claim over a little known clause in their insurance policy, until Global’s Tony Tighe got involved.

But not all renters through Airbnb have had bad experiences.

Tim Ryan told CBS he has rented out rooms for years through the lodging site and has “not had so much as a drinking glass taken from me.”

“Once, someone took a blanket, but four other times, people left blankets, so it’s worked out great for me,” Ryan continued.

In fact, Ryan said he turns 30 to 35 per cent of potential room renters away.

“I screen my people,” he said.

CBS was able to obtain a statement from Airbnb, which read:

“Over 45 million hosts and guests have had positive experiences on AirBNB and situations like this are incredibly rare.”
