Bobcat spends lazy Sunday in south Calgary backyard

CALGARY – If the sizzling long weekend weather makes you feel sluggish, you’re not alone.

A local bobcat spent several hours Sunday snoozing in a backyard in Calgary’s deep southwest.

The homeowner spotted it around 11:00 a.m..

“I was just going to go out to sit in my swing and I saw it. I said to my husband, ‘look at that,’” said 63-year-old homeowner V. Galloway.

The cat lazed about most of the day, until, at one point, it saw a squirrel “and all of the sudden it was half way up the apple tree!”

The cat gained attention online after the Galloway’s daughter tweeted a number of photos.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife was notified but conservation officers decided not to remove the animal. They say bobcats aren’t dangerous to the public, because they usually prey on small animals like rabbits and rodents.

Galloway and her husband have lived in the home near Fish Creek Park for over 40 years and have seen plenty of wildlife, but the bobcat was a first.

Bobcats do frequent the Calgary area from time to time.

Last week, several were spotted in the community of Oakridge, which is also in Calgary’s southwest.
