Elderly couple escape burning Kelowna home

KELOWNA–When a neighbour saw smoke pouring from a Kelowna home, he burst in to help an elderly couple get out.

“As I came around the corner, there was so much smoke coming from the orchard that I stopped my vehicle,” says Wayne Dorman.

“You could just see the flames coming from the garage as we came around the corner, both cars were on fire.”

Dorman says when no one answered the door, he smashed a window and found the couple inside.  He actually carried the elderly woman out.

They were both safely out of the house by the time fire crews arrived.

The fire broke out in the garage of a home on Saucier Road in Kelowna, about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday night.

The garage and two vehicles inside were destroyed, but crews managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the house.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing.

The Kelowna Fire Department is taking the opportunity to remind people that working smoke alarms can save lives.
