Junior Shootout gives young players chance to golf with celebs

CALGARY – 18 young golfers have won some tee-time with the pros from Calgary’s Shaw Charity Classic.

Dozens competed in the Junior Shootout, closest-to-the-pin contest at the Golf Canada Calgary Centre on Saturday.

The Junior Celebrity Golf Experience pairs 18 young people with celebs for nine holes at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club on Monday.

The event traditionally includes Olympians, NHL players, media personalities as well as pro-golfers.

Last year’s roster included NHL star Chris Lindberg.

“He was actually really good at golf and his son was his caddie. So that was pretty cool,” said Tim Duerr, who was paired with Lindberg in 2014.

Organizers say it’s all about inspiring youth to be active, with the help of some of their heroes.

“When you get inside the ropes and you get that taste it’s all about participation. It’s about getting them away from their video games and their TV sets and getting them off the couch and living healthy and active lives,” said Chris Dornan with the Shaw Charity Classic.

The Shaw Charity Classic qualification rounds start Tuesday, with the opening round on Friday morning.
