Burnaby RCMP investigating brutal assault outside Metrotown

WATCH: A shocking sight for residents who live near Metrotown Mall in Burnaby early this morning. They woke up to the sound of a brutal fight and saw a man being attacked. The victim tells Global News he was swarmed for no apparent reason. Jennifer Palma reports.

One man was sent to hospital after being assaulted by a group of men in their twenties outside Metrotown early this morning.

It happened behind the Bay store at Nelson Avenue and Bennett Street around 2 a.m. Police received calls from residents of an adjacent apartment about screaming outside.

But when police arrived on scene, the suspects had already fled, leaving the victim bloodied and on the ground.

The victim returned to the scene of the crime this morning, bruised and bloodied but otherwise fine. He didn’t want to go on camera, but says he left the firefighter’s public house in the early morning hours when he saw his attackers arguing.

When he walked by, he alleges they pulled out a sword-like object, which he was able to wrestle away. He adds that the altercation escalated when he tried to video the group.

Witnesses told Global News the beating happened for up to five minutes before the suspects left in a vehicle.

Burnaby RCMP have one person in custody, and say the investigation is ongoing.
