Plane passenger records terrifying moment before possible emergency landing into ocean

WATCH: A passenger on board a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles captured what may be the scariest moment of his life – an announcement from a flight attendant letting passengers know they may be making an emergency landing into the ocean. Randy Paige reports.

They’re the words no airplane passenger wants to hear: the plane they’re on is going to make an emergency landing in the sea.

That terrifying moment happened for more than 270 passengers on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles on July 29 and 25-year-old Ethan Williams captured it all on his cellphone.

“Something’s not right,” Williams says in the video as he pulls out one of his earphones to listen to a crew member tell the travelers about the emergency landing.

The airline tweeted that an inspection of the plane showed the reason for the disturbance was due to smoke caused by a malfunctioning cooling fan.

Even so, Williams said to CBS that before everyone was told the plane would in fact continue its journey and make a safe landing, he believed he wouldn’t survive.

Cathay Pacific apologized to the CX884 passengers for the inconvenience and gave them each a cash card worth $300.
