WATCH: Catherine Urquart reports from the frontline of the Hatzic Lake fire

A wildfire burning near several homes on a steep hill near Hatzic Lake in Mission is now under control.

The fire started in an out building in an acreage near Draper Street and Ferndale Avenue and quickly spread. In total, six houses above the acreage were evacuated while crews contained the blaze.

Mission mayor Randy Hawes originally said about 150 homes above the location of the fire had been evacuated, some as close as 100 metres away from the flames.

However, he later clarified himself to say there were 150 homes in the area.

The fire grew to five hectares at its maximum size.

BC Wildlife Service said three initial attack crews and three helicopters assisted in fighting the blaze, which has a burning rank of 1 to 2, near Hatzic Lake.
