Evanston neighbourhood leads Calgary population growth: census

WATCH ABOVE: The City of Calgary released census figures Wednesday, and as Global’s Jayme Doll reports, our growth slid just a bit from last year’s record.

CALGARY – The city of Calgary’s population has grown by over 35,000 people to reach 1,230,915 in 2015, according to census data released Wednesday.

Although it’s a 2.99 per cent increase in population, the growth is about 3,000 fewer people than in 2014—“a record year,” according to the city data.

The northwest community of Evanston led 2015 population growth with an increase of 2,853. Eight other communities also saw an increase of more than 1,000 people:

The number of vacant units—meaning those available and ready for occupancy—also increased by 3,211 to 12,526. This is compared to a total of 9,315 in 2014. The overall vacancy rate increased by 2.64 per cent.

“There are currently 462,461 occupied dwellings,” said the city in a release. “Of those, 319,793 or 69.15 per cent are owner-occupied. In 2014, the comparable percentage was 68.73 per cent.”

More than 86,000 Calgarians submitted their census information through the newly-launched online system. Households that didn’t participate in the online process submitted their data through census takers who used mobile computing devices. The two methods sped up the process and allowed for faster delivery of the April 2015 results, said the city.
