KELOWNA — Okanagan residents are being encouraged to donate blood in light of a summer shortage.
Canadian Blood Services says the national blood inventory has steadily declined this summer and needs a boost continue to meet the needs of patients through the August long weekend and into the coming weeks.
“We are currently at about 18,000 units in our inventory, we like to be at a level of about 20,000 to 30,000 units so you can kind of see the gap and where there’s an opportunity for donors to come in and donate,” says Gayle Voyer , Territory Manager for Canadian Blood Services.
According to Canadian Blood Services, it can take up to 50 donors to help save someone who has been in a motor vehicle accident.
The Canada Safety Council reports that “More fatalities occur on Canadian roads during summer months than any other time of year.”
