EDMONTON – In about 14 months, Rogers Place will open, and construction of the downtown arena continues to move along on schedule.

On Tuesday, media members took their first tour inside Rogers Place.

The tour shows the interior of the arena is taking shape:

Construction is more than 50 per cent complete, according to PCL. Lower bowl bleachers have been poured, and the roof is currently being constructed, with expected completion to be this fall. The focus will then turn to completing the interior.

“I’m grateful to say that every time I’ve walked into this building I’ve found a sense of satisfaction knowing that what I’m seeing here at least meets if not exceeds our expectations,” Rod Black, Executive V.P., Katz Group.

The city partnered with the Katz Group in the construction of Rogers Place largely because it would create a considerable increase in downtown development.

Rick Daviss, executive director of the downtown arena project, believes downtown building permit numbers would be weaker if the arena wasn’t being built.

Building permits worth almost $2.4 billion in construction in the first half of 2015 were issued by the city, which was a 14 per cent increase from the same period a year earlier and a 33 per cent rise over the previous five-year average.
