EDMONTON — A deadly collision south of Fort McMurray shut down Highway 63 Tuesday morning.

The collision on the busy northeastern Alberta road happened just south of the Highway 881 junction. The call came into police just after 5 a.m.

A half ton truck driving south crossed the center lane and sideswiped a northbound tractor trailer. The pickup then caught fire.

A 44-year-old man died on scene. No one else was hurt. RCMP refused to release the name of the victim, citing regulations under the Federal Privacy Act.

The highway was closed in both directions and traffic was being redirected onto secondary Highway 881 and other side roads in the area.

Police expected the road to be closed until noon on Tuesday.

The collision happened about 216 kilometres north of the Atmore turnoff, where the Highway 63 kilometre markers begin.
