Solar powered Saskatoon ice cream shop employing inner-city youth

Watch above: Saskatoon’s newest ice cream parlor The Scoop, located in Riversdale, is giving at-risk youth employment opportunities.

SASKATOON – Normally sunshine plus ice cream equals melting. However, for The Scoop in Riversdale, the heat from the sun is what powers the freezer keeping the summer treat cool.

The six solar panels powering the ice cream stand were donated and installed for free by Roots Rock Renewables, and currently produce more energy than required.

The Scoop is a work program through Street Force Youth Centre, offering a fun first summer job for inner city youth.

Manager Emma Ganton says that “since we opened at the beginning of July, we’ve had a huge response from the community, really positive.”

”It’s great to have a first job on the resume and then they can go into better jobs in the future.”

For Street Force Youth member Sharon Settee, working at The Scoop keeps her busy during the summer. She says being with Street Force Youth is “amazing just being around people I can be myself around, and also meet new people and have more friends in the area.”

You can visit The Scoop during one of those long summer afternoons, located on 20th Street West in Saskatoon.
