WINNIPEG – Wiring has been changed and the switch on the PA system has been modified after a conversation aboard the Air1 Winnipeg police helicopter was inadvertently broadcast last month.

The PA switch was accidentally activated and a conversation the police force later admitted was “inappropriate” was broadcast through loudspeakers as Air1 flew over Winnipeg on June 22. Some people reported hearing sexual content and profanities from the helicopter.

The broadcast included radio dispatch dialogue as well as conversation from the cockpit, a police news release issued Friday said.

“A number of variables needed to occur for this to happen,” the news release said. Several steps have been taken to minimize the chance of it happening again, including changes to the helicopter’s wiring system and to the PA system switch.

“No disciplinary action will be taken against the crew members involved,” the news release said.

Twitter erupted following the inadvertent broadcast; tweets about the content of the conversation were sent out with the hashtag #whoops. The Winnipeg Police Service tweeted an apology the next day, also with the hashtag #whoops.
