Dog saved from a sweltering car by Nanaimo RCMP

An RCMP officer is being commended for saving a dog from possible death.

Nanaimo RCMP received a call on Saturday about a German Sheppard trapped in a sweltering car. It was in front of a north end business with the windows rolled up, and no access to water.

A witness told police the dog had been inside the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes. The dog was clearly in distress, however there was no paging system and they couldn’t find the owner.

“The officer returned to the vehicle and made the decision to break the car window and remove the animal,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien of  the Nanaimo RCMP.

The dog was then transported to a local veterinarian for an assessment and kept until its core temperature dropped.  The vet told the officer if the animal’s internal temperature had risen just two degrees more, it would have begun experiencing organ failure.

The owner has been found, and the investigation has been referred to the local SPCA for possible charges.

On July 20, Nanaimo city council amended a bylaw to allow a $500 fine for anyone who leaves their dog in a hot car without ventilation.

“This issue has been addressed time and time again but for some reason, it is being missed by some. Leave your animals at home and not in your vehicles.” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP
