Lethbridge woman offers up free car, if you take good care of ‘Bepsey’

WATCH ABOVE: Leslie Huettmeyer is looking to get rid of her car, and isn’t asking for anything in return, other than a promise that her beloved Bepsey is taken care of. Global’s Quinn Campbell reports.

LETHBRIDGE- Leslie Huettmeyer was driving home from the dealership in her new car, when an idea popped into her head.

She loved her old Dodge Neon, and figured someone would get a little more use out of it.  It’s not worth much money, so why not give it away to someone who could use it?

She calls her beloved car Bepsey.  The 2002 Neon has about 186,000 km. It might not be the perfect ride for everyone, but Huettmeyer says Bepsey was good to her, and now she plans to give it to someone who could use a set of wheels.

She bought the car at a dealership in Fort Macleod, after toughing it out on foot while saving money.

“For two years I walked, took the bus and even road my bike up and down Whoop Up Drive.”

Bepsey’s journey to a new home started on Facebook. Huettmeyer posted a photo of the car, and a caption to the Lethbridge Swap and Buy page, offering her Neon to a family or person who could really use it.

“I can’t wait to see the joy on their face.  I think it’s way more worth the money I would receive from her.”

The ad is honest, telling potential new owners the power steering has a minor leak and there’s a bit of a clunky exhaust pipe.  But, she has some pretty good features too.

“She has a full tank of gas and I just put new tires on in December.”

Once the ad hit social media, the messages have flooded in and Huettmeyer has received hundreds of messages – some from people looking for themselves, some nominating others.

“I’ve got it narrowed down based on their needs, and I’ve met a lot of really great people who could really use the car.”

She plans to make her decision based on the finalists she has, handing over the keys to the next proud owner in just a few days.  This humble young driver says she is just following the golden rule.

“I’ve just seen a lot of kindness here in Lethbridge from people. I believe in paying it forward.”
