REGINA – It’s a dire situation for Saskatchewan ranchers affected by drought.

In response, the provincial government is granting ranchers access to 90,000 acres of public conservation land. Most of that land is in the Parkland area, but the rest is spread out throughout the province.

The environment minister said the dry conditions are very widespread, and a solution needed to be found right away.

“We know how important agriculture is to this province and certainly the cattle industry is a big part of that agriculture,” said Minister Herb Cox. “Whatever we can do to alleviate some of the shortfall in the pastures the way they’ve been burning up in these last few weeks I think is something we absolutely felt we needed to do.”

There are set limits for how long cattle can graze in order to ensure the least environmental impact. As well, the conservation lands will only be accessible until September 15th.
