Off-duty police officers entertain Calgary Stampede crowds

WATCH: Gil Tucker with one band where serving up the sounds is a fun sideline in a life spent serving Calgary.

CALGARY – All veterans of patrolling the beat, some musical members of the Calgary Police Service are now providing the beat during Stampede.

Playing country favourites and classic rock, they call themselves “Frontline” — a reference to their fellow officers serving as first responders.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s another way of looking at the Calgary Police Service, rather than a person in uniform or authority,” said Frontline guitarist Julian Klein.

After years of handling noise complaints and the occasional out-of-control partier during Stampede, it’s a nice change to connect with Calgarians by playing a pancake breakfast on Thursday morning.

“I’ve been a policeman for over 34 years. I love music, so this is just a way to rock out and have fun and give back to the community,” said the band’s drummer, Mike Burton.
