Teen charged in connection with Scouts and Cadets sexual assaults

CALGARY – RCMP in Red Deer have laid charges against a 17-year-old accused of sexually assaulting multiple youths during a four-year span.

During an eight-week investigation which began in May, officers were able to identify five youths, both male and female, who were allegedly assaulted by the suspect.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place in central Alberta between 2011 and 2015.

The accused was involved with Scouts Canada for five years starting in 2007, and with Cadets Canada for four years starting in 2011; RCMP say in some cases, the assaults allegedly occurred while the victims were on trips with the organizations, while others took place at times unrelated to the groups.

The accused is charged with a series of offences, including sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and sexual interference – but cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The accused has been released on a recognizance to a adult under court-ordered conditions, and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on July 9th.
