Health, safety concerns postpone races at Marquis Downs in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Management at Marquis Downs horse track along with the riders have decided to cancel their event Saturday. The decision to halt races was made before 6 p.m. due to smoky conditions currently being experienced in Saskatoon.

Racing manager Rick Fior says races took place Friday night but conditions have worsened. It is now unsafe for riders due to reduced visibility as well as the health of everyone outside in the smoke.

The province says there are about 114 active fires burning in Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada says air quality is poor in many areas of the province due to a large area of smoke from forest fires in northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, the air quality health index in Saskatoon was at 10+, according to the federal agency. Conditions are not expected to improve by Sunday.

People are being asked to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors. Those with heart and lung conditions are most at risk and should avoid outdoor physical exertion.

Horse races are expected to continue July 10, depending on conditions.
