ROTHESAY, N.B. – There was a heavy police presence in a Rothesay, N.B. neighbourhood Saturday evening, after an on-duty officer saw a man with what appeared to be a long gun.
The officer noticed the man while patrolling the neighbourhood near Fairvale Elementary School on School Avenue at around 5:30 p.m.
“She observed a male party entering the wooded area and from what she observed appeared to be a long gun with a scope on it,” said Const. Jason Murray of the Kennebecasis Regional Police.
Officers, including the emergency tactical team, created a perimeter around the area. They also advised residents to stay inside their homes.
“It was just scary,” said Linda McNeil, who lives in the area. “They were right in front of the doors but it was just the feeling of knowing someone was out there.”
Police scoured the area but could not confirm the sighting and began to clear the scene at around 9:30 p.m.
“Since what happened in Moncton last year, you know you don’t want to take anything like that lightly,” said Murray.
Police say they consider the case to be closed at this point.
