VERNON — The wait is almost over for the new Greater Vernon Community Sports Facility. Located next to Okanagan College, the more than $7.5-million complex isn’t set to fully open until September, but the public will have an opportunity to access at least one of its amenities early.

Installation of an outdoor synthetic track is underway and will be open to the public, in limited capacity, by the end of July.

“We realize people are excited to get out there and start using the track and field, which is why we will be opening them up to the public as soon as they are ready to go,” says Regional District of North Okanagan director Bob Fleming.

Construction of the multi-million dollar project started in October of 2013 and was initially expected to be open by the fall of 2014.

That was delayed, after the district decided to expand the project by adding showers. The addition also tacked on an extra $340,000 to the total price tag.

The official opening is now set for the end of September.
