TORONTO — Canadian actress Nia Vardalos said Thursday that Greece has “hard-working, loving people” who should not be blamed for their nation’s economic crisis.

“Please don’t judge a country’s people based on the actions of a government,” the star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding tweeted.

“As a very proud Greek, I’ve encountered comments such as, ‘they should have paid their taxes.’ The ignorance of this comment is profoundly upsetting and selectively obtuse.”

Born in Winnipeg to Greek Canadian parents Constantine and Doreen, Vardalos slammed “the jaded media’s typical dissemination of false information” about the causes of the financial crisis.

“May God bless the people of Greece,” she tweeted.

Vardalos recently wrapped production in Toronto on a sequel to her 2002’s comedy blockbuster, which was also shot in the city. Her 2009 romantic comedy My Life in Ruins was partly filmed in Greece.
