Labour dispute forces cancellations and delays at Pearson airport

WATCH: It’s been a bad week for air travel in Canada. There was yet another bomb threat hoax involving a WestJet flight on Thursday and a labour disruption by those who refuel planes at Toronto’s Pearson airport has led to dozens of flights being delayed or cancelled. Jennifer Tryon reports.

TORONTO – A labour dispute between refueling workers and a consortium of Canadian airlines is causing flight delays and cancellations at Toronto Pearson Airport on Friday.

Airport officials say only 10 of 56 fueling employees showed up for work resulting in a backlog of planes stuck on the tarmac.

The union representing members of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) Local Lodge 2413 are upset over job losses as a result of the airline consortium, led by Air Canada and WestJet, for not renewing an agreement with its current fueling supplier.

Instead, the union said the airlines have signed a different deal with another company resulting in 300 job losses in Montreal and Toronto.

The union has been told its workers can re-apply for the new positions at wages that pay 30 per cent less.

In a media release, IAM said it has filed an unfair labour practice with the Canada Industrial Relations Board and applied for an interim order to halt the supplier changeover.
