Iconic shopping destination Mills Halfiax closes its doors

HALIFAX – After almost 100 years in business,  the upscale Halifax clothing store Mills Halifax has closed its doors for the last time.

Mills Halifax on Spring Garden Road has been a staple of the downtown shopping district for 96 years, but on Thursday the store put out a release saying they’d closed permanently on Tuesday.

“This is a sad day for the people who work at Mills, as well as their families, the people who shop at Mills and the people who sell to Mills,” the release read.

Mills was placed in receivership at close of business on Tuesday. Peter Wedlake of Grant Thorton was named the receiver to manage Mills Halifax’s responsibilities to its creditors, suppliers, and employees, the release said.

The company’s 20 full-time and part-time employees were informed at a meeting this morning.

“As this historic chapter of Halifax retail history comes to an end, we would like to say thank you to everyone who supported Mills for close to a century of being in business in Halifax,” said Lisa Gallivan and Candace Thomas, co-owners of Mills.
