TORONTO — Nine Loblaws-owned stores across Ontario have set a strike deadline for Thursday, after the union representing workers said it rejected a labour deal with the company last month.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 175 and 633 have set a strike deadline for 12:01 a.m. in Zehrs Great Foods and Real Canadian Superstores in Kent, Essex and Lambton Ont.

“We are asking the people in these communities to not shop at the affected stores,” Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175 said in a release.

“These workers are counting on their friends and neighbours for support. Please do not cross their picket lines.”

Workers rejected a settlement at meetings held in mid-June and the union said the proposed strike would affect about 1,600 workers.

“We will do this with local management and colleagues from across our business.”
