Dozens free fall in Vernon

VERNON — It’s an activity on many peoples’ bucket list: skydiving. That’s what dozens of people from Western Canada and the U.S. came to the Okanagan to do this weekend as part of the second annual Great Canadian Freefall Festival in Vernon.

“We have people from all over jumping here and having a good time,” says Sander Dokter, Skydiving instructor at Okanagan Skydive. “If you want to do it just once we can do that if you want to learn how to do it on your own we can do that as well and get you a license.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Participants took the plunge from either 10,000 feet or 13,000 feet above the ground. Many of the thrill seekers at this weekend’s festival were taking in the experience for the first time, while others were returning for another chance to jump. They made formations in the sky, smiling at the cameras attached to their helmets and took in the stunning view below. It’s an experience many said they will never forget.

“You get strapped up, you get put in a plane and you get thrown out and you’re screaming a lot for the first like minute and then you’re confused and then you hit the ground and you think I’m going to do this again,” says first-time skydiver, Ratharam Siva.

The festival runs until Wednesday, July 1 and anyone can join in.
